The SAP Solution Manager is available as technical add-on and is designed to run either on
mySAP Workplace 2.11 (with SAP Basis 4.6D), SAP R/3 4.6C or SAP Web Application
Server 6.10. The SAP Solution Manager will be shipped as one single add-on together with
the SAP Solution Architect for the new SAP Web AS 6.10 at the beginning of 2002.
Although the SAP Solution Manager has the flexibility to run on different platforms, it is not
possible to monitor an SAP Web AS 6.10 from the SAP R/3 4.6x platforms due to slight
differences in the monitoring compatibility. Therefore SAP recommends installing the SAP
Solution Manager as central monitoring system (together with other central platforms and
tools) on a standalone productive SAP Web Application Server. This has the advantage and
flexibility that no dependencies on application level have to be considered when applying
Support Packages or new SAP Solution Manager functionality. Furthermore it is
recommended having the central monitoring functionality and service delivery separate from
business-critical application systems.
If a central SAP Web AS 6.10 is not available, SAP recommends installing the SAP Solution
Manager on any SAP Web AS that serves as a back end system for a mySAP application
component (for example, for mySAP CRM). For both the standalone system as well as the
back end system solution, it is possible to monitor all SAP Systems down to release 3.1I.
If no SAP Web Application Server is available, SAP recommends using either a central SAP
R/3 4.6C standalone system or a mySAP Workplace 2.11 to host the SAP Solution Manager.
The same advantages apply as described above except monitoring does not have upward
compatibility.
If a central SAP 4.6x standalone system is not available, the SAP Solution Manager can also
be installed on any other SAP R/3 4.6C System (except on SAP 4.6C back end systems such
as for SAP CRM 2.0).
If a large customer support organization will use the integrated Support Desk functionality of
the SAP Solution Manager extensively, we recommend using a separate SAP R/3 4.6C
System next to the SAP Solution Manager System.
