Reason and Prerequisites
This note discusses the restrictions regarding the use of functions for Long Products Planning.
Solution
Note to customer:
In this note, SAP describes the restrictions that apply when you use LPP in live systems with SCM 5.1
and SCM 7.0. This note is updated regularly and the contents are valid as of the most recent change date.
LPP function restrictions
- LPP is a function variant of characteristic-based planning in Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS). Therefore, all restrictions and prerequisites of characteristics-dependent planning (CDP) also apply.
- Available-to-Promise (ATP)/Capable-to-Promise (CTP) checks can also be run for products that can be planned with LPP. Thus, the restrictions of these general availability checks also apply.
- You cannot change the receipt quantity or the requirement quantity in manufacturing orders and in planned orders. The order must be deleted and then created again.
- You cannot change a multi-item planned order because the new explosion would cause items greater than one to be lost.
- When you change LPP master data in ERP (for example, in a bill of material or routing), with a subsequent transfer of the production data structure (PDS), a reexplosion of existing APO planned orders or existing production orders in APO is not supported.
- LPP is only supported for the configuration schema or the "configuration relevance" = "characteristic-dependent planning (CDP)".
- LPP works only in connection with a PDS as a source of supply, and not with a production process model (PPM).
- LPP can only create production orders when the "Plan explosion" setting is set to 5 (production data structure generated from R/3) in the "PP/DS" tab page of the material master record. In contrast, you can no longer use the setting 6 (long products plan explosion).
- LPP cannot be used simultaneously with the "Multiple Output Planning" function. You must deactivate this Multiple Output Planning function ('MOP' function) in APO PP/DS Customizing.
- Resetting a status without relevance to planning in APO (such as "Technically completed" (TECO)) is not supported in a LOP/MOP production order in ERP. If the status is reset regardless, the data in APO may be incorrect.
- In the length-based planning procedure, standard heuristics cannot be assigned to the product (at most one length-based and vice versa). A mixture of the two procedures is not supported.
- A "factor" characteristic that contains the required quantity of cables should not be integrated in APO.
Restrictions for the planning procedure
- For the event 'Create or Change a Dependent/Stock Transfer Reqmt in PP/DS', the action for covering dependent/stock transfer requirements with existing receipts immediately is not supported.
Restrictions for ATP
- RBATP with LPP has not yet been released.
- Unlike the standard ATP with characteristic evaluation, the LPP ATP must create temporary quantity assignments during the ATP for existing requirements. This protects available receipts. The temporary requirements exist in parallel with the uncovered requirements for the duration of the ATP transaction. Therefore, the requirement quantity is temporarily doubled. After you save the order, the system removes these temporary quantity assignments again. Then you usually carry out the product heuristic and it corrects the planning restults. If the product is stored in a planned state during the heuristic, no requirements that can be covered by an ATP exist as uncovered.
- When you carry out an ATP check for the components of a planned or production order (from APO) or a production order (from ERP), the LPP ATP creates only confirmations for requirement quantities that are already pegged for stocks and receipts. On the other hand, available stocks and receipts cannot be used because the LPP ATP must protect these with a temporary requirement and this is not allowed to be set during such ATP checks. The LPP heuristic should therefore be run before the ATP check to cover the requirements.
- For technical reasons, no batches can be specified in a requirement if the requirement is for a product variant and it does not have a user-defined configuration.
- The pegging result of the ATP may be different from a subsequent heuristic planning. The ATP creates a confirmation if possible. Termporary quantity assignments are used for this. After you save the requirement, these pegging relationships are not supported. Usually, the heuristic that plans the entire product according to the settings used, is started after the order arrives in the APO.
Restrictions for CTP
- In CTP, planned orders are created only if the material must be procured and not if existing stocks should be cut based on planned orders. Cutting is used to cover demands in ATP, but not in CTP.
- The 'Production Directly' planning procedure is not supported (in APO Customizing: 'Maintain Validation Rules', 'Production', field 'Start Product', select 'Production Directly').
- The lot-sizing procedure "Fixed lot sizes" is not supported in combination with CTP. If you are using "Fixed lot sizes", a confirmation for the replenishment lead time should be set in the system when receipts are unavailable.
Restrictions for the forecasting/requirements planning function
- The function for long products planning is not adjusted to the forecasting/requirements planning function. Many of the possible processes of the forecasting/requirements planning function only run with restrictions. You can use forecasting/requirements planning function in connection with length-based materials only after you have consulted IBU Mill Products & Mining.
- The heuristic tries to cover forecast requirements. However, it does not create any 'A' pegs for the requirement coverage element that is found or created because these quantities should exist for ATP requests.
Restrictions for the backorder processing function
- When you carry out backorder processing, the long products planning (LPP) Available-to-Promise (ATP) creates only confirmations for requirements quantities that are already pegged for stocks and receipts. On the other hand, available stocks and receipts cannot be used because the LPP ATP must protect these with a temporary requirement and this is not allowed to be set during backorder processing. Therefore, the LPP heuristic should try to cover the requirements before the backorder processing run.
Restrictions for retaining fixed pegging
- Goods receipts for production orders with several items should only be created for one item in each case. Otherwise, errors may occur when retaining fixed pegging.
Restrictions for the Planning Heuristic function
- The "Safety stock" function is not supported.
- For the time being, we have decided not to implement a planning heuristic that recognizes date bottlenecks and automatically moves the entire order network accordingly (bottom up). The date/time violations are displayed in the Alert Monitor.
- The heuristic is not able to create a planned order with different characteristic configurations. The length characteristic is one exception. If all other characteristics are the same, the heuristic can create a planned order with several output nodes of different individual lengths. For further information, refer to the documentation about Multiple Position Orders.
- The lot-sizing procedure "Fixed lot sizes" is supported only for product variants with a valuated length characteristic.
- The lot-sizing procedure "Fixed lot sizes" is not supported in combination with CTP. If you are using "Fixed lot sizes", a confirmation for the replenishment lead time should be set in the system when receipts are unavailable.
- The lot-sizing procedure 'Reorder point' is supported only for product variants and for reorder point method '1' (reorder point from the location product master). The fields 'Minimum Lot Size' and 'Maximum Lot Size' are supported. The fixed receipts are added up and compared with the recorder point. If the total is lower than the recorder point, the difference is calculated and counted up to the next whole length. A receipt is created for this quantity. Requirements are not taken into account during the creation of the receipt. Pegging is not created. The evaluation of the material master is used to calculate the individual length characteristic of the receipt.
- The lot sizing procedure 'Periodic lot size' is supported. The 'Minimum Lot Size' field is not supported. However, the 'Maximum Lot Size' field is supported.
- Currently the liveCache is still permitted to peg requirements. In addition to the heuristic, the liveCache also makes assignments, which have the indicator 'D'. Since only the heuristic knows the correct allocation possibilities and these have the indicator 'A', any pegs with 'D' should be ignored.
- The Surplus/Shortage column in the product view (surplus quantity or shortage quantity (pegging)) sometimes displays incorrect results (from a length-based point of view). This column is based on quantities. If, for example, a requirement is covered by a length within the tolerances, this column displays plus, minus or zero, depending on whether the length was shorter, longer or equal to the standard length.
- An assignment logic according to FIFO (first in first out) is not supported. You can use the /SAPAPO/EOGL_REC_SRT BADI to implement this however.
- The following fields from the material master are not taken into account by the heuristic: Pegging strategy, underdelivery tolerance, overdelivery tolerance.
- If you use cutting with manufacturing orders, you must not use the delivered planning procedure '7'. You must first create a copy of this planning procedure and enter it in the affected material master records. For this planning procedure, you must enter the 'Create Planning File Entry' action in Customizing as a 'Reaction to an Event' for the 'Create or Change a Dependent/Stock Transfer Reqmt in PP/DS' event. Reason: If the 'Start product heuristic immediately' action is entered for this event, after you save the results of the heuristic run, the system checks which dependent products should be planned. If the heuristic has just created a cutting order, this means that the same product is planned again because a dependent requirement has changed. Planning for the product will always trigger subsequent planning.
- We have not developed additional alerts for length-based products.
- We have not yet released factor batches based on the product quantity function.
- Materials that have been defined as length-based materials must use a suitable long products planning (LPP) heuristic (or algorithm), such as SAP_LEN_001 (/SAPAPO/EOGL_LENGTH_01) or SAP_LEN_02 (/SAPAPO/EOGLM_HEUR). These are the only heuristics or algorithms that take into account the length-based process. If you use another heuristic or algorithm (such as /SAPAPO/HEUR_ORDER_SPLIT), the accuracy of the planning result cannot be guaranteed, or planning may even terminate as a result.
- If you want to cut non-fixed receipts (the "Cutting Control" field is set to "Stock, Fixed and Non-Fixed Receipt"), the "Reuse Mode" field must be set to the value "Use Suitable Receipt Elements".
- In the heuristic setting "Scope of Planning" = "only open requirements", the heuristic should only schedule the open requirement quantities; that is, only the requirement quantities that do not have a peg for coverage. However, in the following cases, requirement quantities that are already pegged also have to be scheduled (again):
-
- the peg "cuts" more than one requirements length from a batch
-
- the peg "cuts" from an expected receipt
-
- the characteristics of the requirement and the peg receipt are not compatible.
- Storage location MRP areas are not released for the LOP heuristic.
Restrictions for the length calculation function
- The individual product tolerances for cross-plant material variants and configurable materials are not automatically transferred from R/3 to APO. You must maintain them in the product master in the APO system.
- In the R/3 routing, you can maintain the operation unit of measure differently. The conversion factors are taken into account in the standard value times in the PPM. Since the PPM does not recognize different units of measure in the operations, this conversion is not taken into account in the length calculation.
- Parallel sequences are not supported separately in the length calculation.
- We have not developed any additional alerts in length calculation.
- Fixed scraps are not taken into account in capacity planning. Furthermore, the fixed scraps of the operations are not taken into account when the system determines the component quantities of non-length-based products.
- The Core interface (CIF) does not support a change in quantity of 'open' production orders in the APO system.
- The length calculation occurs only in the APO system. If production orders are changed in R/3, the lengths are not recalculated. In R/3, you can only change the net order value quantity to a multiple of the length characteristic. The R/3 Core adjusts the component quantities proportionally.
- Alternative sequences have not yet been released.
- There is no length calculation for "Cut sources".
- The length calculation does not work for subcontracting
- The length calculation does not work with phantom assemblies.
- In the length calculation, the quantity is increased due to the fixed scraps in the routing. The system takes this quantity increase into account for the components (inputs) of the bill of materials (BOM) only for LPP-relevant materials (that is, the input quantities are also increased using the rule of three), however not for materials that are not LPP-relevant. However, as of this release, you can change the quantity of components (inputs) that are not LPP-relevant using a relevant implementation of Business Add-In (BAdI) /SAPAPO/EOGL_ADJ_QUAN.
