Asset life-cycle management (ALM)
A complete solution to manage the technical assets and maintenance resources of a company across the life cycle. This includes support for the investment decision, maintenace and overhaul down to the replacement planning to optimize asset acquisition, increase production output and reduce service costs to increase asset performance and to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO).
Bill of material (BOM)
A list of all of the items that make up a product or assembly. The list is complete for its given purpose, has a formal structure, and states the name, quantity, and unit of measure for each component. A comprehensive PLM solution should offer support for the following categories of BOM: feature and requirements structures, material BOM, document structure, equipment BOM, functional location BOM, sales order BOM, and work breakdown structure BOM.
A new level of inter- and intracompany business process integration. It allows groups of people to work towards a common goal in a joint intellectual effort. The open, yet secure nature of a collaboration environment allows for the bidirectional flow of relevant information among multiple users and their IT systems. The integration of engineering partners into product development is a typical example for a process that requires a collaboration platform.
The configuration management functions collect all of the objects that describe a product or project in a particular life cycle phase, such as as-designed, as-built, as-maintained structures, collecting them under one metaobject. This creates configurations that are consistent, reproducible and distributable to other systems.
Document management system (DMS)
The capture and management of documents within an organization. A DMS includes Web access to support occasional users and work from remote sites as well as a secure document storage area (vault). Additionally a DMS includes search and retrieval, versioning, and content caching.
Enterprise asset management (EAM)
A system to manage the plant maintenance processes within a company to ensure equipment availability and to reduce asset downtime. EAM is part of an asset life-cycle management solution.
Engineering Data Management System or Enterprise Document Management System or Electronic Document Management System. Alternative name given to a Document Management System (see DMS).
Environment, health and safety (EH&S)
A solution for environmental, health, and safety issues. Main areas include: Hazardous Substance Management, Product Safety, Dangerous Goods Management, Industrial Hygiene and Safety, Waste Management, Occupational Health, Environmental Reporting. It ensures regulatory compliance, helps to maintain a positive public image, reduces costs, and enables a learning organisation by supporting the exchange of information within the organization.
Also called Corporate Portal or Portal. A Web site that provides employees or members of the extended business community with context driven access to information, applications, tools, and services to allow them to participate in business processes. It includes search capabilities, personal productivity tools, and the ability to customize the start page for different user groups and individuals.
An individual, physical object that is maintained as an autonomous unit. It may be incorporated in an operational system or subsystem.
Integrated product and process engineering (iPPE)
Integrated Product and Process Engineering (iPPE) supports concurrent product development and production process design to reduce time-to-market and time-to-volume. It enables the collection of engineering and manufacturing specific information, such as BOM's, routings, and line designs in one integrated model. iPPE is particularly suited to repetitive manufacturing of products with a large number of variants.
Product data management (PDM)
A system used during product design to store and retrieve data to ensure information consistency throughout the life cycle of a product. It typically handles information such as geometric models, CAD drawings, images, as well as documents, engineering bill-of-materials, and supports approval processes and engineering change management. PDMs are part of an overall PLM system.
Business intelligence and reporting capabilities of a product life-cycle management (PLM) solution to improve decision making in areas such as portfolio management, product costing, occupational health, product safety, product quality, and maintenance management.
Addresses product and process quality throughout the product life cycle and along the supply chain. The key areas are Quality Planning, Quality Control and Quality Improvement.
Is an integral part of a PLM system aimed to support process and consumer product industries. Recipe Management covers the complete formulation process and therefore needs tight integration into the quality management and environment, health, and safety capabilities of the overall PLM solution. To improve time-to-volume, integration to supply chain functions must be provided.

Total cost of ownership (TCO)
Total costs associated with the acquisition, operation, maintenance, and disposal of a product or piece of equipment.
Description of complex products that are manufactured in many variants, for example cars. All variants are defined as one variant product. The variant product has a super BOM, containing all the components that can be used in the product, and a super task list, containing all the operations that can be used to manufacture the product. By assigning the variant product to a class, you assign characteristics to the variant product. You use these characteristics to describe a variant. By analyzing the characteristics, object dependencies ensure that the correct components are selected from the super BOM and the correct operations are selected from the super task list. The "sales of configurable products" process is a typical example for the use of variant configuration and also exemplifies how a CRM and PLM solution have to work together.
